Kate Smith

Kate originates from Glasgow where she studied the harp at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama as a junior scholar and later graduated from Trinity College of Music in London studying with world renowned soloist, Sioned Williams. She regularly gives recitals all over the country, including venues such as the Fairfield Halls and St James’ Piccadilly, and has recently performed Handel’s Harp Concerto with the Croydon Symphony Orchestra. In 2000, Kate won the UK Harp Association Prize and in 2001 the Croydon Music Festival Concerto Prize.

Kate is a member of the Aurora Duo, an established flute & harp duo. Together they have been finalists of the “Gaetano Zinetti” International Chamber Music Competition in Verona (2005) and gained a recommendation for “Outstanding Talent” from Making Music’s “Young Concert Artist Award”. They have performed extensively throughout the UK and Europe and are in much demand with various orchestras, having performed the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto in London, Birmingham and Glasgow and recorded with The Wallace Ensemble in 2008. The Aurora Duo completed a successful tour of Scotland in October 2004 and April 2006 as well as a tour of Yorkshire and Durham. They work in association with Beaumont Wright Promotions and perform together for the ‘Lost Chord’ scheme (a scheme that brings music to dementia sufferers to promote well being) on a regular basis.

In addition to her chamber music work, Kate is in demand for both session and orchestral work. October 2005 saw Kate backing the pop band ‘McFly’ on an electric harp for their debut Arena tour (and DVD) of the UK and Ireland, playing to over 200,000 people. She has also performed on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ with Katherine Jenkins and Andrea Bocelli. Kate works with orchestras such as the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Norway and the Ulster Orchestra for radio broadcasts, CD recordings and live performances at the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Centre and the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. Kate enjoys her private teaching work and has been newly appointed as the Harp Professor for the Royal Marines Music School in Portsmouth.
